The Brands of Mzansi Language

So the other day while having dinner at home with a pair of close friends Siso (Please take note of this name as it is bound to come up quite often) and I, we started discussing the words that we use to refer to certain objects. The words we ascribe to objects are generally accepted by most, not only are they accepted but these words are also understood in reference to objects, ie the word dog generally refers to the four legged, domestic animal that barks, coffee refers to the caffeine based drink that is made from coffee beans… and so on and so forth.

So back to the conversation… I’m not sure exactly how this topic came up but none the less it was established that as black people and more specifically as black South Africans we tend to refer to items using a popular brand name. So this is how it works, a plastic bag that is used to carry items out of a supermarket is called a chekas yes that is correct… a checkers, after the supermarket CHECKERS HYPER. Toothpaste, which is what we use on our toothbrushes to clean our teeth this is called colgate, no matter which brand of toothpaste you use in your home when you are asked for the colgate, it is immediately understood that the toothpaste is needed.

Why this phenomenon exists or how its came about is not a question I have the answer to but the trend is that the most known brands, or the brand that was most commonly known back in the day is the word that is used to refer to certain items. I suppose that at the time when these associations were made there were very few brands if any, to choose from and as time went on and more brands came into existence it was just simpler to stick to what was known. However this is not an explanation that makes sense for everything, for instance the fact that cold drinks are all referred to as coke cannot be understood in terms of the above because all flavours and names of coke products have generally existed for the same amount of time. Fanta and every other cold drink is however called coke, ya fanta, I suppose. A kudbery(Cadbury) is a chocolate and chewtex (kutex) is nail polish. These are but a few of the brands that get total exposure through the use of everyday language here in South Africa...

It amazes me how language and just verbal communication in general is used by particular groups of people to suit them and the thoughts that they want to express… in Durban a similar phenomena exists, where the Durbanites have created a language that is completely their own, they will poke you with cutlery if you don’t buy them a groovy… lol…. But alas, this is a story for another day.

French toast in perspective

I'm pretty sure we all have that one meal each day that kinda just puts everything into perspective, I most definately do, especially if that meal happens to come at a point in the day when im at my most ravenous.

I have a friend who's favourite meal of the day is breakfast. No matter the time of day... we could all be indulging in juicy medium rare steaks for dinner at 8pm and his meal of choice will be an omelette, this is his happy meal.

Well last nights dinner... french toast and chicken.

I had no idea what to cook and in my starving state I wanted to cook everything in the fridge and order everything on the Mr delivery menu. In hindsight I could think of a couple of really good meals that I could have made last night, that would have had me salivating at just the thought of it (infact i can already smell the peri peri on the prawns)but this is the meal I settled on, one of the oddest dinners ive made in long time and yet also one of the most enjoyable.

Its strange how food makes me happy, this is one of the scariest thoughts for me because I could generally always eat, never really need to say no to good food especially if it comes with good company but my body just refuses to agree with me on this one. we are always in conflict the two of us, about what I should actually be eating and when... so I try to make things right by using the gym as a sort of home base... still... body doesnt always listen. None the less food good food is something that aligns thoughts, triggers conversation (or blogging) and can have people talking about an eating experience for years, its often difficult to distinguish whether the company or the food was better. Somehow food can bring people together or just have you relishing your aloneness, solitude, oneness.

So this really simple, quite uninteresting meal, french toast and chicken got me thinking... the simplicity of breakfast at night is the meal that put my day into perspective my day. Wonder if ill have a happy meal today...

HELLO

So this is my attempt at a blog of my own... for as long as I can recall writing has been something that just sort of calms my spirit and yet i cant seem to figure out why I dont do more of it... Its funny how the things we know are good for us always seem to take a back seat in our lives.

So, this blog is about absolutely everything and nothing at all ... true to the nature of the random writer that I am. it is about today and yesterday and sometimes about tomorrow. Food and frustrations. Inspiration and work. Love and my determination to keep hate absent from my life. its about friends, family, my life and the people who choose to be in it as well as those who are in it by default. Its about the fact that I like the way these letters look in lowercase. and that i cant decide whether or not i want to regrow my dreads...

Its called Peace, Faith, Love and Hope because these elements are highly important to me and the way I live and would like to live. I need to keep my spirit at peace, my faith, even when it dwindles, is strong, love moves me from place to place and hope allows me to always keep all of these alive.

This blog will be testament to a journey, one i embarked on through conception and birth and one that I hope will move beyond my death.

I hope that this blog will be a true reflection of me and everything and everyone that consumes me, smothers me and is me.

Here Goes... Hello
